Anonymous asked: One thing I don't get is people complaining about 50 Shades, like I get that some parts o it show an unhealthy relationship (with the guy being all jealous and stalkerish), but then some people are actually saying that the book shows rape somehow?? I only skimmed through it but I swear Ana signs like a contract or something establishing her limits or whatever so I don't really understand how people can think that the sex is non consensual, could you enlighten me on that?

^ There’s the time Christian raped Ana.

    Now for some creepy quotes.

    From Christian Grey:

Alaska is very cold and no place to run. I would find you. I can track your cell hone - remember?

    From Ana:

And this evening, he actually hit me. I’ve never been hit in my life. What have I gotten myself into?

A short conversation between the two:

A: Are you going to hit me?

C: Yes, but it won’t be to hurt you. I don’t want to punish you right now. If you’d caught me yesterday evening, well, that would have been a different story.

Oh, and the reason Christian was so upset with Ana that he wanted to hit her was that Ana had hung out with a male friend.

An email from Christian after Ana expresses her dislike of the spanking:

For the record - you stood beside me knowing what I was going to do. You didn’t at any time ask me to stop - you didn’t use either safe word. You are an adult - you have choices. Quite frankly, I’m looking forward to the next time my palm is ringing with pain. You’re obviously not listening to the right part of your body.

A few more from Christian (keep in mind these were said before Ana decided to be in a D/s relationship with him):

I want you to behave in a particular way, and if you don’t, I shall punish you, and you will learn to behave the way I desire.

I’d like you to be courteous and to follow the set of rules I’ve given you and not defy me.

I need to control you. I need you to behave in a certain way.

    An email from Ana:

You wanted to know why I felt confused after you - which euphemism should we apply - spanked, punished, beat, assaulted me. Well, during the whole alarming process I felt demeaned, debased and abused.

    Christian’s reply:

If that is how you feel, do you think you could just try and embrace these feelings, deal with them, for me? That’s what a submissive would do.

    From their contract:

The Submissive may request her release at any time, such request to be granted at the discretion of the dominant subject only to the submissive’s rights under clauses 2-5 and 8 above.

    From Christian:

"I don’t like to share, Miss Steele. Remember that." His quiet, chilling tone is a warning.

    Ana’s inner monologue:

    ughsocialjustice:

I didn’t read the book but I think it was because of Christian not respecting her safe word? Idek
    -the Canadian one

Holy crap. I just wanted to call Kate. What happened to the generous, relaxed, smiling man who was making love to me not half an hour ago?

    Other important things to note:

    • Christian has Ana sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) that prevents her from legally being able to speak to anybody about their relationship. This, of course, isolates Ana from her family and friends.
    • There’s a serious lack of aftercare.
    • During the conversation about their limits, Christian refused to let Ana say no to things she didn’t want to do.
    • He also purposely got her tipsy before the conversation so she “wouldn’t over-think things”.
    • Christian tells any that as his submissive she has to endure pain because it ‘comes with the territory’.
    • Once, Christian takes her to a private area in a restaurant, after she had asked to stay in public.
    • Besides the NDA, there was another contract that said the submissive’s release request would be granted at the discretion of the dominant (quote mentioned above).
    • Christian fails to inform Ana that the aforementioned contract isn’t legally binding, knowing full well Ana has zero relationship experience let alone experience with BDSM. When asked if he was ever going to tell her, Christian avoids answering.
    • Christian takes Ana to his hotel when she’s incredibly drunk. This is before they’re in any kind of relationship.
    • Christian tracks and follows Ana to another state. Ana had left because she needed space from Christian.
    • Christian fucks women who look like his mother, because they look like his mother. He constantly refers to his mother as ‘the crack whore’.
    • Ana cries intensely for a rather long time after being spanked.

To sum it up, Ana and Christian’s relationship flies past unhealthy and dives straight into abusive. While there is a contract, there isn’t proper negotiation about their limits. Christian purposely gets Ana intoxicated for the ‘negotiation’ - something he admits to doing. Christian refuses to listen to her when she says she doesn’t want to do certain things (i.e. anal sex, pain). When she tells him to stop when they’re having sex (screencap above), he won’t. So there’s a lot of rapey things that happen and even an outright rape. As disturbing and terribly written as the book is, I recommend anyone doubtful of the consent issues and abuse prevalent throughout the series to read the books thoroughly. Just don’t buy it - there’s plenty of sites that offer free downloads.
